Punjab to Stop Illegal Housing Schemes in 32 Districts

The Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department has completed land-use and zoning plans for 32 districts, establishing designated areas for residential, commercial, and industrial use, according to an official source.

This move aims to curb the rapid conversion of agricultural land into residential developments. Over the past few decades, Punjab has lost 225,000 acres of green land to 6,000 housing schemes, with around 4,000 allegedly developed illegally in collaboration with municipal and development authorities.

A senior official expressed concern over the loss of such valuable agricultural land due to unplanned urban expansion. In response to these issues, the government began developing master plans a few years ago to address the growing challenges of urbanization.

These plans now make it illegal to develop housing schemes or commercial and industrial projects on land not approved in the master plans. The official explained that this unchecked urban growth has not only reduced agricultural production but also contributed to environmental problems like smog and pollution.

The government, recognizing the urgency of the situation, has set up a project management unit to ensure the preparation of master plans for all districts in close collaboration with local authorities. The new zoning regulations are expected to guide development over the next 20 years, ensuring sustainable growth.

  • The Punjab government’s initiative to implement zoning plans is a positive step toward sustainable development, protecting agricultural land and controlling unplanned urban sprawl. This move will ensure organized growth while addressing environmental concerns like pollution and smog. Such regulations are crucial for preserving green spaces and fostering long-term urban planning.
