Pakistan cricket team’s interim head coach, Aqib Javed, has downplayed the growing criticism over the state of pitches in Pakistan under his tenure and has taken a shot at the previous regime for wasting the opportunity to take this step sooner.
While others have raised concerns about the nature of the pitches being used for Tests in Pakistan, Aqib Javed offered a contrasting perspective. He stated,
I’ve been hearing a lot, and people are commenting on where our Test cricket is heading. If these decisions had been made earlier in Test cricket, we might have been in the race for the WTC final.
His comments come amid ongoing debates over the low-scoring, spin-friendly surfaces prepared during recent home series against England and the West Indies, which many believe do not align with Pakistan’s historical strengths. Javed, however, believes that such pitches, if introduced earlier, could have been pivotal in securing crucial results during Pakistan’s WTC campaign.
Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in the 2023–2025 WTC cycle left fans and critics searching for answers. This led to detrimental shortcomings, underscored by a 2-0 home loss to Bangladesh for the first time in Pakistan’s history.
Pakistan seemed to be heading towards the same outcome against England before Aqib advised the use of turning wickets, which changed Pakistan’s fortunes.
Aqib Javed’s defense of the pitches also hints at a broader shift in how Test cricket will be approached in Pakistan. Captain Shan Masood and Vice-captain Saud Shakeel have also backed their coach’s strategy, which likely means that Sajid Khan, Noman Ali, and Abrar Ahmed will become the linchpins of the Test squad, with batters taking a backseat.
However, some argue that this approach could hinder the team’s adaptability to foreign conditions. Pakistan will face Bangladesh, West Indies, and England away from home in the 2025-27 WTC Cycle, which could prove challenging for the team. Aaqib Javed’s comments emphasize the need to balance short-term gains with long-term planning.
