The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s Standing Committee on Primary and Secondary Education has called for the immediate hiring of teachers to address staff shortages in schools.
Chaired by committee head Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, the meeting focused on key education issues. Tarand urged officials to raise community schoolteachers’ salaries to meet minimum wage standards.
Provincial Education Minister Faisal Khan Tarakai, several MPAs, and senior education officials attended the session. Participants discussed measures to ensure quality education, including the extension of contracts for school leaders.
Tarakai noted that school leaders are tasked solely with monitoring education quality, and proposals for their future roles are being developed.
The committee was informed that ministerial staff transfers would occur after 1.5 years of service at one station, starting with three districts before expanding province-wide. A scholarship program has also been launched in low-literacy areas, particularly merged districts, to boost student enrollment.
Regarding the Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP), plans are underway to expand it to other districts and mainstream participating students. Tarand emphasized the need to resolve existing ALP issues before its rollout.
Delays in school construction in Charsadda and Swat were also highlighted, with Special Secretary Education Qaiser Alam directed to address them urgently. Officials were told to seek Finance Department approval for pending school projects nearing completion.
