The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is facing potential shutdown under the Trump administration, following recent developments involving billionaire adviser Elon Musk.
Musk, who has recently taken an active role in reviewing government agencies, believes USAID is beyond reform and should be eliminated entirely. He discussed the matter with the president and claimed there was agreement on closing the agency.
The push to dismantle USAID comes amid increasing scrutiny of its operations. Two senior security officials were placed on leave after refusing to allow Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to classified information.
Despite lacking proper clearance, Musk’s team later gained entry to sensitive materials. USAID’s website also disappeared without explanation, adding to uncertainty about its future.
The administration has already frozen foreign aid programs, significantly reducing USAID’s global humanitarian, development, and security efforts. Thousands of aid workers have lost their jobs as a result.
The agency, which oversees billions in assistance for over 100 countries, now faces an uncertain future as Musk and the administration continue their efforts to restructure government agencies and cut federal programs.
