Ricky Ponting Picks Two Pakistanis Among Toughest Bowlers Faced

Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting, known for his dominance at the crease, has revealed the toughest bowlers he encountered during his illustrious career. In a recent podcast, the three-time World Cup winner named two legendary Pakistani pacers, Wasim Akram and Mohammad Asif, as among the most challenging bowlers he ever faced.

Ricky Ponting, who amassed over 27,000 international runs across 168 Tests and 375 ODIs, faced some of the most fearsome bowlers of his era. While he acknowledged other bowlers, it was the mastery of Wasim Akram and the precision of Mohammad Asif that truly tested his batting skills.

Wasim Akram, regarded as one of the greatest left-arm pacers in history, tormented batsmen with his lethal swing and pinpoint accuracy. With 414 Test wickets and 502 in ODIs, Wasim remains Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker in both formats. His ability to generate reverse swing and outthink batsmen made him a nightmare for even the best players.

While Wasim Akram’s presence in any such list is practically guaranteed given his stature in cricketing history, it is Asif’s inclusion that truly commands attention. Ponting’s mention of Mohammad Asif is significant because of his relatively limited career. Despite a career cut short by off-field controversies, Asif was widely regarded as one of the most skillful swing bowlers of his time. His deceptive seam movement and control made life difficult for even the most technically sound batsmen.

The Aussie is not the only cricketer to give Asif his due despite the off-field issues. Former England international Kevin Pietersen and South African captain AB de Villiers have also named Asif as the bowler to cause them the most trouble. The fact that Asif’s name is mentioned by such greats only adds to the disappointment surrounding his career, which ended prematurely despite his potential to become one of the greatest in the history of the sport.

Alongside Akram and Asif, Ricky Ponting also named West Indian great Curtly Ambrose as one of the best pacers he faced. Ambrose, with his towering presence and relentless accuracy, took over 600 international wickets. The Australian legend also admitted that Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble had the upper hand in their duels, dismissing him more than any other bowler in international cricket.

Sri Lanka’s spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan and South Africa’s pace sensation Dale Steyn also made Ricky Ponting’s list.

Ricky Ponting remains one of the most successful captains in cricket history, leading Australia to World Cup victories in 2003 and 2007. His acknowledgment of Wasim Akram and Mohammad Asif underscores the immense impact Pakistani fast bowlers have had on world cricket. Their ability to trouble one of the game’s greatest batsmen serves as a testament to their brilliance with the ball.
