Federal Minister for Privatization, Board of Investment, and Communications, Aleem Khan, has suggested imposing a toll tax on tourists visiting Gilgit-Baltistan to support infrastructure development.
The proposal came during a meeting in Islamabad with Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, where they discussed the National Highway Authority’s (NHA) role in expanding the region’s transport network.
Aleem Khan highlighted that a Rs. 15 billion feasibility study had been submitted to the Planning Commission to enhance safety on the Jaglot-Skardu Road. The study identifies nine critical areas needing improvement, and he assured that its approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) would be expedited.
He also addressed the long-standing issue of compensation payments for those affected by the Karakoram Highway expansion project, promising necessary action.
Emphasizing Gilgit-Baltistan’s significance as a major tourist destination, the minister noted that the toll tax revenue would be used for road maintenance and development. However, he clarified that local residents would be exempt.
Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan welcomed the initiative, expressing full support for collaborative efforts to boost the region’s infrastructure and tourism potential.
