The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) to appear in person on February 10, citing poor traffic management during cricket matches.
Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while presiding over a case related to smog control measures, filed by petitioner Haroon Farooq and others. The court expressed frustration over the severe traffic disruptions in Lahore, highlighting the lack of planning despite authorities being aware of the Champions Trophy months in advance.
Criticizing the city’s traffic chaos, the court emphasized the need for clearly marked alternative routes to ease public inconvenience. It ordered the CTO to provide an explanation at the next hearing.
Additionally, the court raised concerns about the inactivity of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), stressing that immediate action was required. It also ruled that no new project should proceed without prior approval from the Environmental Protection Department.
Addressing water conservation, the court suggested that mosques should install water tanks instead of using direct taps for ablution to prevent wastage. It further instructed officials to submit a report on the installation of water meters in Lahore.
The hearing was adjourned until February 10, with the court expecting detailed updates on traffic management and water conservation measures.
