Shubman Gill Sets Historic Record Against England

Indian opener Shubman Gill etched his name in cricketing history today with a record-setting knock against England in the third and final ODI at Ahmedabad. Opening the batting once again, Gill overcame the absence of Rohit Sharma to steer his team toward posting a mammoth total against the visitors.

During his sublime innings, Gill also passed the 2,500-run mark in ODI cricket, surpassing South African legend Hashim Amla to become the fastest batter to reach this milestone. The record further cemented Shubman Gill’s reputation as one of the most promising young batters in the world.

Gill, who debuted for India in January 2019 against New Zealand, needed just 50 ODIs to reach the 2,500-run mark—three fewer than Amla, who had achieved the feat in 53 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander reached the landmark in style, smashing a boundary off Gus Atkinson in the 10th over of India’s innings.

The batter has been in sensational form throughout the ODI series against England. After a commanding 87 off 96 balls in the series opener in Nagpur and a fluent 60 off 51 in the second match in Cuttack, Gill has been a key architect of India’s dominance. With an ODI average exceeding 60, Gill is not just breaking records but also making a strong statement ahead of India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

Gill’s stellar performances have also seen him rise to No. 2 in the ICC ODI batting rankings, leapfrogging Indian captain Rohit Sharma. With 781 rating points, he is now just behind Pakistan’s Babar Azam (786 points), who is also in action against South Africa at this very moment.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam is on the verge of his own record—if he scores at least 33 runs against South Africa in Karachi, he will become the fastest batter to 6,000 ODI runs. As the cricketing world watches these two modern batting greats push new boundaries, one thing is clear: Shubman Gill’s rise is no longer a promise—it’s a reality.
