Pakistan’s Football Legend Ready to Take Over PFF Presidency

The future of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) is poised for a major shift, with seasoned international Kaleemullah Khan ready to become part of the governing body. The newly-elected PFF Congress is reportedly ready to approve a draft of proposed amendments, clearing the way for elections and the lifting of FIFA’s suspension.

The battle for the presidency is already intensifying, with prominent figures preparing to contest for one of the most pivotal roles in Pakistan’s footballing landscape. One of the leading contenders for the PFF presidency is former Pakistan national team captain Kaleemullah Khan.

A respected figure in the Pakistani football scene, Kaleemullah has been an influential player both domestically and internationally. Known for his leadership on the pitch, he captained Pakistan to a historic series win against India in 2014, a moment still celebrated in the country’s footballing history.

Kaleemullah’s candidacy has gained traction due to his standing in the history of Pakistani football. His experience in international leagues, including stints in the United States, adds significant weight to his campaign. In addition to his playing career, Kaleemullah has actively contributed to football development in Pakistan.

He organized a football event at the Peoples Sports Complex in Karachi, showcasing his ability to mobilize resources for the sport. Kaleemullah confirmed his aspirations in a social media post on Twitter, writing,

I’ve worn the green with pride on the pitch, now let me wear the mantle of leadership for our football family. I promise to nurture every dream, honor every sweat-soaked jersey, and ignite the passion in every heart. Join me, as we write a new chapter of glory and unity for Pakistani football.

While Kaleemullah is generating significant buzz, Syed Zahir Shah, a newly elected member of the PFF Congress and a seasoned politician, is also positioning himself as a strong contender. Another veteran of Pakistan football, Faisal Saleh Hayat, who served as the PFF president for several years and held a key position in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), is also rumored to be considering a bid for the presidency, according to reports in local media.

As the election campaign gathers momentum, the PFF Normalization Committee (NC), tasked with overseeing the smooth transition of power, is undergoing significant changes as well. Haroon Malik, the current chairman, will step down on February 15 as his contract is not being renewed.

His replacement, Saud Hashmi, has been a member of the NC from the beginning and is expected to ensure fair and transparent elections. With the suspension likely to be lifted soon and the electoral process in full swing, all eyes will be on the upcoming elections.
