Punjab Bans Washing Cars at Home, Imposes Huge Fine

The Punjab government has officially banned washing cars at home using water pipes. A fine of Rs. 10,000 will be imposed on anyone caught wasting water while washing their vehicle. This decision comes as part of efforts to conserve water due to decreasing rainfall in the province.

The ban has been enforced under the Punjab Environmental Act, following the Lahore High Court’s directives. Officials have reported that Punjab has received 42% less rainfall over the past five years, making water conservation a priority.

To further control water wastage, authorities have also shut down illegal car service stations. Petrol pumps and service stations that do not have a water recycling system must install one by February 28, 2025, or face a fine of Rs. 100,000.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been assigned to monitor the implementation of these rules. The government has also prohibited the use of oil for vehicle washing and the extraction of groundwater at construction sites.

The Lahore High Court praised the Punjab government for its efforts in controlling pollution and improving environmental conservation. Authorities have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of these measures to prevent water wastage and promote responsible water use across the province.
