Samsung confirmed at its Galaxy S25 launch event that it is developing a tri-fold smartphone, expected to debut in Q3 2025 alongside the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. Although Samsung has not officially revealed the device, industry analyst Ross Young has provided key insights into its design and display specifications.
A Larger Cover Display and a New Folding Mechanism
According to Ross Young, Samsung’s tri-fold will feature a 6.49-inch cover display, the same size as the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. This shift suggests that Samsung is moving away from the narrower cover screens seen on previous Z Fold models, favoring a more user-friendly outer display.
Unlike Huawei’s Mate XT, which folds in an S- or Z-shape, leaving part of the screen exposed, Samsung will likely implement a G-style folding mechanism for its tri-fold device. This means both sides will fold inward, fully protecting the display when closed. The design could offer better durability and prevent scratches or damage from external elements. Reports suggest that Samsung is also developing a new display and protective film to enhance the device’s longevity.
However, complex manufacturing challenges will likely limit production volumes, positioning the phone as an exclusive high-end offering rather than a mainstream foldable device.
Pricing and Positioning
Given the premium nature of foldables, Samsung’s tri-fold is unlikely to be affordable. Huawei’s Mate XT launched at nearly $2,800 in China, and Samsung’s version will likely be in a similar price range, making it one of the most expensive foldables on the market.
Galaxy Z Fold 7: Slimmer Design, Limited S Pen Features?
A report from a Korean media source claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be Samsung’s slimmest Fold yet, surpassing the Z Fold Special Edition, which measures 4.9mm when unfolded. However, this thinner profile may come with trade-offs—some S Pen features could be removed due to space constraints.
Since the Z Fold 5 and Z Fold 6 already lack Bluetooth support for their S Pens, Samsung might further limit functionality on the Z Fold 7. This move would align with the company’s approach to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which features an S Pen without Bluetooth for a more compact design.
While Samsung has not officially confirmed these details, leaks and industry reports indicate that the upcoming foldables will introduce significant design improvements. With Q3 2025 fast approaching, more details are expected in the coming months.
