Update on New Zealand Squad Updates Before Tri-Series Final

As New Zealand gears up for the highly anticipated tri-nation series final against Pakistan on February 14, Head Coach Gary Stead has provided crucial updates on the fitness of two key players—Rachin Ravindra and Lockie Ferguson—both of whom have been dealing with injuries ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Rachin Ravindra’s availability for New Zealand’s upcoming matches and the tri-series final remains uncertain after he suffered a painful blow to the forehead during the opener against Pakistan. The incident occurred when Ravindra was struck by a flat pull shot from Khushdil Shah off Michael Bracewell, leaving the all-rounder with blood on his face and a significant injury concern.

However, there has been some positive news surrounding his recovery. Stead confirmed that while Ravindra is still a few steps away from being match-fit, he is making progress. The 24-year-old has been following the Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocols and, according to Stead, his headache, which persisted for several days, has now subsided.

Ravindra was seen performing light warm-ups at Karachi’s National Stadium on Thursday, hitting a few cricket balls for the first time since the injury. Despite these positive signs, Stead stressed that Ravindra still has further steps to clear before being considered fully fit for the final against Pakistan or the Champions Trophy.

Meanwhile, the Kiwis have received some respite in the injury department through Lockie Ferguson. The pacer, who has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury while playing for Desert Vipers in the ILT20, has received an optimistic update.

Stead confirmed that Ferguson resumed bowling and increased the intensity of his training sessions. “Lockie has been out there, and he’s had a couple of bowls since he’s been here. He lifted the intensity up a little bit more tonight, and I’m pleased with how he’s tracking,” Stead noted. The Black Caps coach also mentioned that Ferguson is on track to play in one of the team’s next two games, potentially featuring in the tri-series final or their warm-up match against Afghanistan on February 16, 2025.

Despite the absence of Ferguson and Rachin, New Zealand has had a successful run in the tri-series so far, defeating both Pakistan and South Africa in their opening round. The Black Caps are now focused on clinching the tri-series trophy, which would provide a significant boost as they head into the Champions Trophy.
