Toyota is set to unveil its third-generation fuel cell system at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo on February 19, 2025. This new system is designed to be more durable, efficient, and cost-effective.
Toyota plans to introduce this system in markets including Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026.
Toyota claims that the new system is up to twice as durable as its predecessor, achieving longevity comparable to traditional diesel engines. Fuel efficiency has been increased by 20%, allowing for a longer cruising range, and innovations in cell design and manufacturing processes have significantly reduced production costs.
This versatile fuel cell system is suitable for various applications, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, ships, trains, and stationary generators. Since the launch of the Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle in 2014, Toyota has sold approximately 28,000 units globally and supplied over 2,700 fuel cell systems for buses and generators.
Toyota has been trying to implement its hydrogen fuel cell system for vehicles for decades now, however, issues with the high cost of hydrogen fuel, storage problems, and limited use cases hampered large-scale adaption. Although the company claims to have mitigated these issues, whether they translate into real-world usability remains to be seen.
