Former Cricketer Questions PCB’s Selection Process

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has once again raised concerns over the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection policies, questioning the inconsistency in squad selection, especially ahead of crucial international tournaments such as the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. His comments come in the wake of Faheem Ashraf, Khushdil Shah, and Tayyab Tahir’s inclusion in Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad, a decision that has sparked controversy.

Speaking to Geo News, Rashid Latif revealed his communication with PCB officials concerning the selection of previously discarded players, including Faheem. Despite being provided an explanation, Rashid found it puzzling that the all-rounder was not awarded a central contract or included in major tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, or South Africa, despite his alleged strong performances.

“If Faheem had such good records, why wasn’t he awarded a central contract? Why wasn’t he part of the squad in past overseas tours?” Latif questioned.

He further criticized the selection process, asserting that the players are not at fault, but the flawed system is. Rashid Latif drew parallels between the current PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s administration and previous regimes, particularly mentioning Zaka Ashraf’s tenure as PCB’s head.

“We keep thinking things will change when chairmen change, but their work remains the same. Some players were sitting on this very TV channel (Geo Super), a big event came, and they were suddenly selected—this happened under Zaka Ashraf, and now, under Mohsin Naqvi, the same thing is happening,” he remarked.

Rashid Latif’s comments highlight the growing concerns regarding last-minute selections for major tournaments. Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah’s inclusion in the Champions Trophy squad has left many in cricketing circles unimpressed. The duo had not been part of Pakistan’s ODI setup for years before finding a spot in the 15-member squad. Adding to the scrutiny were their underwhelming performances in the tri-nation series, which has further elevated questions about their selection.

Despite the reservations of seasoned pundits like Rashid Latif, Pakistan is unlikely to make any changes to their Champions Trophy squad. The time for talking is over, as Pakistan faces the Kiwis in the tournament opener on February 19th. All eyes will be on these players, but another underwhelming tournament could result in more questions being asked of the team management. For now, fans across Pakistan will be hoping that the team delivers on its promise, regardless of who plays or not.
