Nio’s Firefly Mini EV Aims to Revolutionize The Electric Vehicle Market

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) catalog has shared new information about Nio’s upcoming Firefly electric vehicle (EV). The Firefly will come with a 42.1 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 420 km according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). CLTC isn’t reflective of real-world figures, and you should expect the actual range to be between 350-400 KM.

The Firefly will support battery swapping, allowing users to easily change, charge, and upgrade it. The battery pack is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) type supplied by Sunwoda, marking the first collaboration between Nio and this supplier. The vehicle has been available for pre-sale since the last Nio Day, with a starting price of 148,800 yuan (approximately $20,400 or Rs. 57 lac). It is expected to officially launch in April.

In terms of size, the Firefly measures 4003 mm in length, 1781 mm in width, and 1557 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2615 mm. The car features lightweight wheels and specially designed low-rolling-resistance tires to enhance energy efficiency. Its electric drive system, battery energy density, and thermal management strategies are all optimized for energy efficiency.

The Firefly will have a rear-wheel-drive motor that produces a maximum power output of 105 HP. The vehicle is designed with a nearly balanced weight distribution between the front and rear, which improves traction and handling.

The EV boasts a floating full LCD instrument panel and a central control screen. It has a dual-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a center console that eliminates physical buttons, featuring a column-mounted gear shifter instead.

The electric hatchback offers a spacious 92-liter front trunk, the largest in its class, with layered storage and a drainage function for various gear. When the rear seats are folded down, the cargo space expands to over 1,250 liters. It meets the latest safety standards, including C-NCAP and Euro NCAP five-star ratings, and comes equipped with nine airbags as standard.

Nio’s CEO Daniel Jin has stated that the Firefly is designed to be a global EV. It will compete with brands like BMW’s Mini, Smart, and the joint venture between Mercedes and Geely, all while offering a more affordable price. The brand plans to enter the European market in the second quarter of 2025, with plans to expand into Latin America and Southeast Asia afterward. There’s no word on whether Nio will launch vehicles in Pakistan.
