E-Bike Battery Explosion Kills Pakistani Student

A tragic incident in Sydney has shocked the Pakistani community after 21-year-old Haider Ali lost his life in a house fire caused by an exploding e-bike battery. Haider had moved to Australia from Pakistan and was working as a food delivery rider while studying civil construction.

The fire broke out early Tuesday morning in a house on Rowley Road, Guildford. Reports say that the lithium-ion battery of Haider’s e-bike exploded while charging, causing a massive fire. Five housemates managed to escape, but Haider was trapped inside his room and could not survive. Firefighters arrived around 5 AM and put out the fire, but it was too late to save him.

A neighbor said she was woken up by loud explosion noises and saw flames lighting up her house. She immediately called emergency services while watching Haider’s housemates try to put out the fire with a hose. Witnesses recalled the terrifying moments, with some hearing screams as people tried to save their friend.

Fire and Rescue NSW officials confirmed this was the third fire caused by a lithium-ion battery in just 24 hours. Experts warn that these batteries can overheat and explode, leading to intense heat, flames, and toxic smoke. Officials have advised people to avoid charging e-bikes while sleeping and ensure that smoke alarms are working. There was no indication that Haider’s house had a functioning smoke alarm, which could have provided an early warning.

The Pakistan Association of Australia has expressed deep sorrow over Haider’s tragic death. Hamid Saroya, the association’s president, warned people about the dangers of low-quality e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries, urging them to be cautious when using electric vehicles.

Authorities have now issued strict warnings about the hazards of lithium-ion batteries. People are advised to only use high-quality batteries and avoid unsafe charging practices to prevent similar tragedies.

Haider’s family has been informed, and arrangements are being made to send his body back to Pakistan.
