According to COO Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has achieved a new milestone, surpassing 400 million weekly active users. Lightcap’s post on X noted, “We feel very fortunate to serve 5 percent of the world every week.”
This marks a significant jump from August 2024, when the platform had half as many users, and an even more dramatic increase from November 2023, when the numbers were four times lower than they are today.
The rapid growth of ChatGPT comes amid fierce competition, especially following the launch of DeepSeek, a new AI platform that caused a stir earlier this year. DeepSeek’s rapid rise initially raised concerns that OpenAI’s dominance could be threatened, but ChatGPT’s surging user base suggests it remains the preferred AI assistant for a global audience.
As OpenAI continues its expansion, the company is streamlining its ChatGPT offerings. Soon, users will no longer need to manually select reasoning models, making the experience more seamless. Additionally, OpenAI is preparing to launch GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, which will be available in both chat and API clients. Notably, GPT-5 will also be accessible to free-tier users, potentially driving even greater adoption in the coming months.
With AI technology evolving rapidly, OpenAI’s ability to sustain its lead will depend on continuous innovation and how effectively it responds to emerging competitors. However, with a growing audience base, powerful new models, and a more user-friendly approach, ChatGPT appears well-positioned to maintain its dominance in the AI space.
