Nvidia Opens Applications for RTX 5090 and 5080 Purchases

Nvidia has launched a Verified Priority Access system for its newly released GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs, aiming to tackle ongoing supply shortages and prevent scalping. This initiative offers a limited number of customers the chance to buy an RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 Founders Edition directly from Nvidia, rather than through third-party retailers, where availability has historically been a major challenge.

Limited Eligibility

The program is currently available only to US customers who had an Nvidia account created before January 30, 2025. To participate, eligible users must apply through Nvidia’s online form, and Nvidia will begin distributing invitations next week. However, Nvidia has not disclosed the total number of GPUs allocated for this program or the criteria for selection.

This approach expands on Nvidia’s previous invite-only pilot program for the RTX 4090, which aimed to prevent bulk purchases by scalpers and crypto miners. With the RTX 50 series, Nvidia is expanding the program to reach more verified buyers. The goal is to ensure that actual gamers and enthusiasts have direct access to the latest hardware, rather than seeing prices inflated by resellers on secondary markets.

GPU Availability Concerns

Despite Nvidia’s efforts, GPU supply shortages have been a persistent issue for years. Even though the Verified Priority Access system may help limit bulk buying, it does not necessarily increase overall stock. The demand for high-end GPUs continues to outpace supply, and previous priority access systems have still left many customers empty-handed.

Additionally, Nvidia has yet to confirm whether it will expand this initiative to other markets or if it will be a recurring feature for future GPU releases. Given the increasing complexity and cost of next-generation graphics cards, some consumers are questioning whether Nvidia should be focusing on increasing manufacturing capacity instead of implementing limited access programs.

Will This Strategy Work?

While Verified Priority Access may improve access for some buyers, it remains to be seen whether it will have a significant impact on reducing scalping and resale markups. Past attempts by both Nvidia and AMD to limit resellers have met mixed results, with demand still greatly exceeding supply.

For now, those eager to purchase an RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 will have to sign up, wait for an invite, and hope for the best—a process that still leaves many consumers frustrated in an already competitive market.
