England Backs PSL Experience Ahead of Champions Trophy Opener

As England starts its Champions Trophy campaign against Australia today in Lahore, captain Jos Buttler has underscored the importance of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) experience in navigating the challenges posed by local conditions. Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Friday, Buttler expressed confidence in his squad while acknowledging the competitive nature of the tournament.

Buttler emphasized the productive practice sessions the team has had in Lahore, stating, “We’ve had a few productive practice sessions in Lahore, which have been very beneficial.” He highlighted the form of his top three batters, saying, “Our top three batters are in great form, and we aim to step onto the field with a strong combination.”

With the match against Australia looming, Buttler stressed the necessity of setting a competitive total. “We will try to score as many runs as possible to put pressure on the opposition,” he remarked, indicating a proactive approach to the game.

Reflecting on England’s recent struggles in India, where the team faced significant challenges, Buttler remained optimistic about the advantages gained from the PSL. “The conditions here in Pakistan will be different from India,” he noted. He added, “However, we have players in our squad who have played in the PSL, and they are sharing their experience with us, which is proving to be valuable.” This insight from players familiar with the local conditions is expected to bolster England’s performance.

England will face their arch-rivals Australia, a Champions Trophy match that carries considerable weight following their disappointing 3-0 ODI series defeat against India. Buttler’s side will be looking to make a strong statement in their opening match of the tournament.

Following the clash with Australia, England’s schedule includes a second group-stage match against Afghanistan on February 26 at Gaddafi Stadium and a final group encounter against South Africa on March 1 at the National Stadium in Karachi.
