Former Indian cricketer Piyush Chawla has identified Pakistan’s middle-order batter Salman Ali Agha as the biggest threat to India ahead of their highly anticipated group-stage clash in Dubai on Sunday.
Chawla’s comments come in light of Agha’s impressive performances, particularly during Pakistan’s recent matches. The batter showcased his attacking prowess in the Champions Trophy opener against New Zealand, scoring a quickfire 42 runs off 28 balls despite the challenging circumstances of the chase. His ability to change the course of a game was evident during Pakistan’s record run chase against South Africa in the ODI Tri-Series, where he played a pivotal role.
In a recent interview, Chawla praised Agha’s aggressive batting style, stating, “The biggest threat from the Pakistan team is Salman Agha because he’s the kind of player who can change the course of a game on his day.” He further elaborated on Agha’s capabilities, noting, “When Pakistan was chasing 350-odd runs against South Africa, the kind of hundred he got was remarkable. He’s also batting well against New Zealand. He’s an aggressive player who can turn the game around.”
Chawla’s assessment highlights Agha’s potential to be a game-changer, especially in high-pressure situations like the upcoming match against India.
While acknowledging Agha’s threat, Chawla also provided insight into the overall dynamics of the upcoming match. He suggested that India may have the upper hand, citing their superior record against Pakistan in ICC tournaments and their strong recent form. “Based on form, India has the edge because, in ICC tournaments, especially in the one-day format, India has performed well against Pakistan,” he stated.
Chawla pointed out that although Pakistan has a slight advantage in the Champions Trophy, the current form of both teams suggests that India might have a better chance. He concluded, “The way the Indian team is playing and how Pakistan played against New Zealand—India has a better chance.”
Pakistan, led by captain Mohammad Rizwan, will face India in their second match of the tournament on Sunday in Dubai. The Men in Green are looking to bounce back after suffering a 60-run defeat against New Zealand in their opening game at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi on February 19.
In contrast, India started their campaign on a high note, comfortably chasing a 229-run target against Bangladesh, thanks to Shubman Gill’s outstanding 101-run performance.
