To fill the void left by fast-bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse, the the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named young leg-spinner, Rehan Ahmed as his replacement. Ahmed, who has played six ODIs for England, will join the squad in Pakistan later this week.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has also approved the inclusion of Rehan Ahmed in the England squad. In a statement, the ICC said:
The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Rehan Ahmed as a replacement for Brydon Carse in the England squad.
Brydon Carse was ruled out of the ongoing ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 due to a left toe injury. Carse, who was part of England’s playing XI in their five-wicket defeat to Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday, had been nursing the injury since England’s recent away ODI series against India. Despite being declared fit to play in the Champions Trophy opener, the injury aggravated during the match, leaving the ECB with no choice but to withdraw him from the tournament.
In a statement, the ECB confirmed the development: “Durham and England bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse has been ruled out for the remainder of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy due to a left toe injury. Carse sustained the injury during England’s opening Group B match against Australia on Saturday in Lahore.”
England, currently placed third in Group B, will face Afghanistan in their second group-stage match on Wednesday. Their final group-stage fixture is scheduled against South Africa on March 1. With one loss already on the board, England will need to win both matches to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
