Pakistan Head Coach and Staff Likely to Get the Sack After Champions Trophy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly preparing to part ways with interim men’s cricket head coach Aqib Javed and his support staff following the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The decision comes amid Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the tournament, which has raised questions about the team’s preparation, strategy, and overall management.

Aqib Javed was appointed as the interim head coach late last year after abrupt resignations from both white-ball coach Gary Kirsten and Test coach Jason Gillespie.

Despite promising results in the Australia and South Africa ODI series, Aqib Javed’s tenure was marred by inconsistent performances like the Tri-Nation Series. Pakistan’s early exit from the Champions Trophy, following back-to-back defeats against India and New Zealand, only raised more questions about his tenure.

Pakistan entered the Champions Trophy 2025 with high expectations, especially as co-hosts of the tournament alongside the UAE. However, their campaign has been far from ideal.

The opening match against New Zealand, Pakistan struggled to take wickets and crumbled during the chase of 320 in front of the home fans in Karachi. In their second match against India in Dubai, Pakistan suffered a six-wicket defeat, with their bowlers failing to defend a competitive total.

The lack of a clear game plan, questionable team selections, and underwhelming performances from key players have all contributed to Pakistan’s poor showing, leading to widespread criticism from fans and analysts alike.

It is not just Aqib Javed who is facing the axe. Reports suggest that the PCB is also planning to overhaul the entire support staff, including the batting, bowling, and fielding coaches.
