South African captain Temba Bavuma has shared his thoughts on the team’s unexpected detour to Dubai during the Champions Trophy. While Bavuma acknowledged the challenges posed by the tournament’s scheduling, he emphasized that the situation could have been avoided.
After securing the top spot in Group B with a win over England, South Africa had to travel to Dubai to monitor the outcome of the Group A match between New Zealand and India. The result of this match was crucial in determining where South Africa would play their semi-final. India’s victory and a semi-final encounter with Australia meant that South Africa had to spend an extra day in Dubai before traveling to Lahore on Monday for their match against New Zealand on Wednesday.
“It is what it is,” Temba Bavuma said at a press conference on the eve of the semi-final, reflecting on the unexpected detour. “The logistics and scheduling are beyond our control. There’s not much we could have done to influence that. But, from a logistical standpoint, things could have been more efficient.”
However, Temba Bavuma highlighted the positive aspects of the unplanned stopover in Dubai. “Some of the guys took the opportunity to unwind a bit. They played some golf, went sightseeing, while others used the time to recover. It was a good chance for the players to recharge, and we made the best of it,” he added.
South Africa and New Zealand have been among the teams that faced the most travel during the Champions Trophy. After today’s game, the Proteas would have played on three of the four venues selected for the competition, while the Kiwis would have visited every stadium.
Despite the travel disruptions, the 34-year-old Temba Bavuma made it clear that the team would not be using this as an excuse. “We’re in Lahore now, and we’ve put that behind us. We’re not letting it affect our preparation for tomorrow. Our minds are fully focused on what’s ahead,” Temba Bavuma said confidently ahead of South Africa’s crucial semi-final against New Zealand.
The winner of the second semi-final will face India in the final on March 9th, with another trip to Dubai.
