’90s Boys’ Hit Back at Critics

There seem to be no dull days in the Pakistan cricket hemisphere these days, and yesterday was another example as former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Waqar Younis, took a pointed shot at his and his former teammate’s critics. Waqar’s response comes on the heels of thinly veiled jibes from cricket expert Dr. Nauman Niaz, as well as former cricketers Rashid Latif and Mohammad Hafeez.

Rashid Latif and Nauman Niaz had referred to Waqar Younis as one of the “90’s ke Launde” or 90’s boys, blaming them for ruining Pakistan cricket. They called out several prominent cricketers from the 1990s, questioning their influence in cricketing governance despite not having delivered significant results in global tournaments. Mohammad Hafeez also recently challenged their credentials, calling them out for their lack of silverware despite their otherworldly achievements on a personal level.

The criticism has not sat well with the former captain, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to remind everyone of their qualifications. The legendary fast bowler let his and Wasim Akram’s statistics do the talking, with many social media users siding with the legendary duo as the war of words continues between Pakistani pundits.

Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis’ Combined Stats

Statistic Combined Record
Test Matches 191
ODIs 618
Total Wickets 1,705
Runs Scored 6,607
Five-Wicket Hauls 77
Ten-Wicket Hauls 32

Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram formed one of the most legendary bowling partnerships in the history of the game. Despite their achievements, it remains true that they could not deliver major silverware for Pakistan, while being part of some of the strongest teams Pakistan fielded in major events.

While this debate is likely to rage on, both sides seem to be firm in their stance. This squabble between former cricketers once again highlights the discord Pakistan cricket faces, which has held it back in the past and continues to do so to this day. The outcome of this episode remains to be seen, but the quicker each party can move on, the better it may be for Pakistan cricket.
