Dubai Announces Jail for Begging

Dubai Police have ramped up their efforts to eliminate begging across the city during the holy month of Ramadan, deploying special task forces and increasing surveillance to tackle the issue.

According to local media reports on Thursday, authorities have been actively targeting beggars, as their presence has caused significant disruption since the start of Ramadan.

In a recent operation, police arrested nine individuals found begging in public spaces. These arrests were carried out by specialized teams deployed in various areas of the city to curb the practice.

Authorities have issued a stern warning, stating that individuals caught begging face up to three months in jail and a fine of 5,000 dirhams.

Dubai Police have also urged residents to report beggars through multiple channels, including the “Police Eye” mobile app and the 901 helpline. This initiative is part of a broader crackdown aimed at eliminating begging while raising public awareness about the issue.

Ahead of Ramadan, Dubai Police launched the “Donate Wisely” campaign, encouraging residents to support only recognized charitable organizations instead of giving money to individuals on the streets. The campaign also aims to protect the public from professional beggars who exploit people’s generosity.

Officials have warned that many beggars use fabricated stories to solicit money, often targeting busy streets, mosques, and other high-footfall areas.

By donating responsibly, authorities emphasize that residents can help ensure their contributions reach those in genuine need while keeping the community safe from fraudulent schemes.
