Karachi has recorded over 10,000 dog bite cases in January and February 2025, marking a significant rise compared to the same period last year, official data shows. The alarming increase has raised concerns about public safety and the growing stray dog population.
According to Dr Romana Farhat, head of the rabies clinic at Civil Hospital Karachi, 5,795 dog bite cases were reported at the hospital in the first two months of this year, compared to 3,269 cases during the same period in 2024.
Similarly, Jinnah Hospital has treated more than 5,000 cases so far this year, a sharp rise from over 3,000 cases recorded during the corresponding months last year, said emergency in-charge Dr Irfan Siddiqui.
Medical experts stress the importance of immediate first aid in case of a dog bite. They advise washing the affected area with detergent soap for at least 15 minutes to lower the risk of infection.
Completing the full course of the anti-rabies vaccine is also essential to prevent severe health complications.
Besides dog bites, Civil Hospital Karachi recorded 13 cases of cat bites in February. Experts warn that rabies is not limited to dogs, as the virus can also be transmitted through bites from cats, donkeys, and monkeys.
They urge individuals to seek medical attention immediately after any such incidents to prevent potential infections.
