In a significant development for cricket fans, England’s star batter Harry Brook has opted out of his IPL 2025 contract with Delhi Capitals (DC) for the second consecutive season. This decision, communicated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officials, not only leaves Brook at risk of a significant financial hit but also exposes him to a potential two-year ban from the tournament.
Harry Brook, who was purchased by DC for INR 6.25 crore (£590,000) during the IPL auction last November, took to social media to explain that he needed “time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.” The 25-year-old has been a key figure in England’s white-ball cricket and is often linked to the role of England’s next white-ball captain. His decision appears to be one driven by the need to manage his workload effectively.
“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL,” Harry Brook wrote. “I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge.”
Harry Brook’s withdrawal has left him vulnerable to a two-year suspension from the IPL under a new rule introduced ahead of the 2025 auction. This regulation, aimed at curbing frequent pullouts by overseas players, stipulates that any player who registers for the auction, is selected, and then withdraws without a valid reason will face a ban from the IPL and its auction for two seasons. The only exception is for injuries or medical conditions, which must be confirmed by the player’s home board.
Brook’s only previous IPL season was in 2023 with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where he struggled to find consistency. Despite a memorable 100* off 55 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he finished the season with 190 runs at an average of 22.11 from 11 matches.
As the IPL season approaches, all eyes will be on whether the Delhi Capitals can adapt to Harry Brook’s absence and if the young Englishman’s decision will have long-term consequences for his career in the tournament.
