ARY News reported that a corruption scandal has been uncovered at Punjab University’s Institute of Education and Research Department.
The preliminary inquiry report reveals financial irregularities and fake recruitments. It details how six high-value commercial shops were leased out at significantly reduced rates to favored individuals, bypassing proper tendering procedures. These leases were also granted indefinitely, and the security deposits intended for the university treasury were allegedly misappropriated by implicated officials.
Key figures implicated in the mismanagement include the former department head, an associate professor, and several staff members. Additionally, a separate investigation into fraudulent appointments at Punjab University has been referred to the Anti-Corruption Department.
The initial inquiry recommends a comprehensive investigation and strict disciplinary measures against those found responsible.
Last year, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore sought to close a longstanding corruption case involving former PU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mujahid Kamran and others. NAB cited insufficient evidence after a thorough review, leading to a petition to dismiss the reference against Dr. Kamran, Dr. Khan Ras, Deeba Akhtar, and Dr. Hassan Mubeen, among others. This case, which had been ongoing for years and involved serious allegations, remains significant in the university’s history.
