Education Boards to Face Special Audit

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly has mandated a comprehensive audit of all seven provincial education boards, expressing serious concerns over alleged financial irregularities and performance issues. The audit, scheduled for completion within four months, will scrutinize financial expenditures, procedural irregularities, and the marking processes from 2022 to 2024.

Key Decisions and Concerns

The directive was issued during a PAC meeting held Tuesday at the Sindh Assembly, chaired by Nisar Khuhro. Attendees included committee members Sadia Javed, Khurram Karim Soomro, and Javed, along with senior officials like Universities and Boards Secretary Abbas Baloch and the heads of education boards.

Chairman Khuhro voiced dissatisfaction with the boards’ management, highlighting repeated instances of financial mismanagement and growing concerns over exam result manipulation.

“The boards face accusations of awarding top grades in exchange for money, which ultimately undermines student performance in entry tests,” Khuhro stated.

Khuhro emphasized that despite the Sindh government’s initiative of providing free education up to the intermediate level, the integrity of results remains compromised. The government allocates Rs 2 billion annually for examination fees, yet concerns about transparency persist.

“The future of our youth is at stake. We cannot tolerate any compromise on education standards,” Khuhro warned.

The issue gained prominence when PAC member Khurram Karim Soomro raised questions regarding Amir Qadri, the former chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK), who was removed following allegations of tampering with first-year results. Soomro demanded updates on the investigation and clarity on the marking system.

Transparency and Accountability

The PAC pledged strict oversight to ensure the audit is thorough and unbiased. Khuhro likened the process to the special audit conducted for Gorakh Hill, stressing that education boards must meet the same transparency standards.

  • Audit Focus: Financial records, marking procedures, and potential irregularities (2022-2024)
  • Timeline: Completion within four months
  • Expected Outcome: Improved transparency, restore public trust, and fair grading practices

The PAC’s move reflects an urgent commitment to safeguarding educational standards in Sindh. Authorities aim to hold responsible parties accountable while ensuring students receive fair assessments, free from corruption and malpractice
