President Asif Ali Zardari has acknowledged the economic hardships faced by Pakistan’s working class and urged the government to provide meaningful relief in the upcoming budget.
Addressing a joint session of parliament, Zardari highlighted rising inflation, increasing utility costs, and the financial strain on the salaried class. He called for salary and pension increases, reduced income tax for workers, and lower energy costs to ease the burden on citizens.
He also emphasized job creation instead of layoffs, stating that utilizing a skilled workforce is crucial for economic growth.
Zardari said that this is the eighth time he has spoken as a civilian president at the start of a parliamentary year. However, his speech was met with strong opposition, as PTI lawmakers disrupted the session with loud protests, forcing him to wear headphones.
Calling for political unity, the president urged all parties to prioritize national interests over personal disputes to strengthen democracy and stabilize the economy.
He also claimed that economic conditions have improved, citing a drop in the policy rate and an increase in foreign reserves. He stressed the importance of good governance and reforms to meet public expectations and drive national progress.
