Google has officially lifted the curtain on the Pixel 9a, introducing a wallet-friendly option in the Pixel 9 lineup. Pricing starting at $499 , the phone will go for sale this April, promising advanced features typically found in pricier devices.
Right off the bat, the Pixel 9a adopts the same design language as the rest of the Pixel 9 series. This means a flat glass panel on the front with edges that transition into a flat aluminum frame. On the rear, Google has opted for a polycarbonate back, providing durability without significantly increasing weight. Furthermore, the Google Pixel 9a is IP68-certified, which represents a notable upgrade over last year’s Pixel 8a in terms of water and dust resistance.
When it comes to display specifications, the Pixel 9a features a 6.3-inch pOLED screen with a 2424 x 1080 resolution and support for a 120Hz refresh rate. Moreover, maximum brightness can reach 1800 nits when displaying HDR content across the entire screen, while peak brightness tops out at 2700 nits (at 5% of the display area). Although the screen offers HDR, color depth is capped at 8-bit.
Color choices include Obsidian, Porcelain, Iris, or Peony, although not all colors will be available in every market.
Under the hood, the Pixel 9a runs on Google’s new Tensor G4 chipset, complemented by the Titan M2 security chip for on-device protection and robust encryption. The phone ships with 8 GB of RAM by default, and buyers can opt for either 128 GB or 256 GB of internal storage.
Moreover, the Google Pixel 9a comes with Android 15 straight out of the box, ensuring users have immediate access to Google’s latest software. The company guarantees seven years of OS and security updates, which is one of the longest software update promises in the Android realm.
Although the camera’s megapixel count has decreased from earlier A-series models, the Pixel 9a introduces a 48MP f/1.7 main shooter with Quad PD Dual Pixel AF and OIS. Complementing the primary lens is a 13MP ultrawide camera, while the 13MP front camera handles selfies and video calls.
The Pixel 9a is the first A-series model to include Macro Focus for close-up shots and the Astrophotography mode for capturing night skies.
Equipped with a 5,100 mAh Li-Ion battery, the Pixel 9a can supposedly last 30+ hours on a single charge. This also makes the Google Pixel 9a the biggest battery Pixel to date, putting it ever so slightly ahead of even the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
It supports 23W wired fast charging and Qi wireless charging. As for cost, the base variant starts at $499. Those seeking additional storage can upgrade to the 256 GB version, although prices vary by region.
