Karachi Kings Moving on From Coach and Captain Ahead of PSL X

In a bold shake-up ahead of the tenth Pakistan Super League season, insiders report that Karachi Kings are preparing for a significant leadership overhaul, with both captain Shan Masood and coach Phil Simmons possibly making way. The experienced duo has been with the franchise for one season—Simmons was appointed in 2023, while Masood took over the captaincy after joining from Multan Sultans last year.

Although discussions about their departure have been ongoing, the franchise has yet to announce definitive successors for either role. Under the guidance of Shan Masood and Phil Simmons, the Karachi Kings finished with a 4-6 record in PSL 9, which may have sparked the decision to make changes as the franchise looks to bounce back in PSL X. While the team has kept quiet about potential replacements, several players in Karachi’s 2025 squad have the leadership experience to step up. David Warner, Kane Williamson, James Vince, and Mohammad Nabi all have ample captaincy experience and could be called upon if needed.

Another factor in Masood’s possible departure could be the abundance of top-order batting options in the Kings’ lineup for the upcoming season. Tim Seifert, Litton Das, Warner, Williamson, and Vice all prefer roles in the top four, which could have worked against Masood, especially after a season where he managed just 158 runs in 10 matches, at an average of 15.80.

While Masood’s removal may be a tactical decision, Simmons’s exit comes after he requested to step down in order to fulfill prior commitments with the Bangladesh national cricket team. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is reportedly in talks to offer him a longer-term role as head coach.

These dual changes highlight Karachi Kings’ strategic efforts to recalibrate ahead of what could be a crucial campaign. With fresh leadership on the horizon, the team’s management seems determined to assemble a squad capable of competing at the highest level in an increasingly competitive PSL.
