Nearly 10 Million WhatsApp Accounts Banned in India for This Reason

In its most recent monthly compliance disclosure, WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, revealed it blocked over 9.9 million accounts within India during January 2025. This large scale ban has to do with the company’s ongoing campaign against spam, fraudulent activities, and other forms of platform abuse, which were detected in these accounts.

Given its vast user base in India, WhatsApp has a major task in ensuring a secure and reliable communication space. Approximately 1.3 million of the banned accounts were identified and removed by WhatsApp’s internal systems before any user reports were filed. These preemptive removals stemmed from WhatsApp’s systems automatically detecting questionable behavior, including spreading mass or automated unwanted messages while some were spreading false information or using contact lists from unauthorized sources

During that same January 2025 period, WhatsApp’s Indian users lodged 9,474 complaints against other users, addressing a range of issues from unwanted spam to misuse of accounts. Following a thorough review of these user grievances, WhatsApp acted on 239 accounts. This response included both account bans and, in cases where complaints were deemed unfounded, account restoration.

WhatsApp has clarified that these actions were taken in compliance with India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

WhatsApp’s account monitoring takes place at three different times, once an account is registered, when it sends messages, and when the account receives negative reports from others or is blocked by people. To further refine its safeguards, a team of human analysts examines complex cases to enhance the platform’s overall surveillance.

WhatsApp has consistently warned that users who share misinformation, engage in harassment, or are involved in unlawful activities risk permanent account suspension. Furthermore, Indian IT regulations mandate that the company release monthly reports, promoting transparency regarding the volume of banned accounts and the types of grievances filed by users.
