The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has announced that the new moon of Shawwal will be born on March 29, 2025, at 3:58 PM (PST), according to astronomical calculations.
The sighting of the moon, however, will depend on key factors such as its age, distance from the sun, altitude at sunset, and atmospheric conditions.
- Age of the Moon at Sunset: Around 27 hours
- Angular Distance from the Sun: Nearly 16 degrees
- Moon’s Altitude at Sunset: About 14 degrees
Based on these factors, there is a high probability that the Shawwal crescent will be visible in Pakistan on the evening of March 30, 2025. If the moon is sighted, Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on March 31, 2025, following 29 days of Ramadan.
Similarly, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries are also expected to sight the crescent on March 30, marking March 31 as Eid ul-Fitr.
SUPARCO clarified that while these calculations provide a strong indication, the final decision on moon sighting will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, based on testimonies received from across the country.
