Pakistan’s Central Govt Debt Crosses Rs. 73 Trillion

The total public debt stock of the federal government increased by 12.7 percent on a year-on-year (YoY) basis in February 2025 as compared to the same month last year.

According to the monthly data issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the debt stock increased to Rs. 73.036 trillion in February 2025 as compared to Rs. 64.806 trillion in February 2024.

On a month-on-month basis, the total public debt stock of the federal government increased by 1.3 percent or Rs. 912 billion compared to Rs. 72.124 billion in January 2025.

The data shows that the domestic debt of the central government increased by 19.6 percent from Rs. 42.671 trillion in February 2024 to Rs. 51.022 trillion in February 2025 while it increased by 1.5 percent over the previous month.

Out of total domestic debt, the long-term public debt increased by 23.4 percent from Rs. 34.618 trillion to in February 2024 to Rs. 42.721 trillion in February 2025.

The stock of short-term debt increased by 3.5 percent from Rs. 7.954 trillion to Rs. 8.231 trillion during the last year.
