All European Union passport holders, including children and infants, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom, Schengen.News reports.
EU nationals have been eligible to apply for the ETA since March 5, 2025, but with the transitional period now over, the permit is mandatory. Those arriving at the UK border without an ETA will be denied entry.
What Is an ETA?
The ETA replaces the Electronic Visa Waiver scheme and applies to all travelers who do not require a visa for short stays in the UK.
The UK Home Office clarifies that the ETA is not a visa but rather a digital travel authorization. It does not guarantee entry but allows the holder to travel to the UK.
The purpose of the ETA is to enhance border security and prevent immigration system abuse. Once issued, it permits multiple visits of up to six months at a time over two years or until the passport expires—whichever comes first.
How to Apply for an ETA
Applying for an ETA is quick and straightforward.
-
The easiest method is through the UK ETA app.
-
Alternatively, travelers can apply via the official UK government website.
-
Applicants must provide:
-
Contact and passport details
-
A valid photo
-
Payment of a fee
-
Answers to security questions
-
Most applicants receive an immediate decision via email. However, UK authorities advise travelers to allow up to three working days for processing in case further review is needed.
Group Applications & Travel While Awaiting an ETA
Each traveler must apply for an ETA individually, even if traveling in a group. Since applications are processed separately, decisions may be issued at different times.
If urgent travel is required, applicants can still travel to the UK while waiting for their ETA decision.
What If Your ETA Is Denied?
If an ETA application is rejected, the applicant will be informed of the reason and can reapply.
However, there is no appeal process for denied applications. Those who are refused an ETA must apply for a visa if they still wish to travel to the UK.
ETA Validity & Fee Increase
An ETA is valid for two years unless the passport expires earlier.
-
The current fee for an ETA is £10 (€12).
-
On April 9, 2025, the fee will increase to £16 (€19) to reduce taxpayer funding for migration and border control.
Who Is Exempt from ETA Requirements?
Certain groups are not required to obtain an ETA, including:
-
Individuals holding a valid visa or permission to live, work, or study in the UK
-
British and Irish citizens
-
Passengers transiting through a UK airport (who do not pass through border control)
-
Residents of Ireland traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man
-
French schoolchildren on an official France-UK school trip
-
Holders of British Overseas Territories or British National (Overseas) passports
-
Individuals exempt from immigration control
Thousands of travelers, including EU citizens, have already applied for an ETA, but official statistics for April 2025 have yet to be released.
