The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) grandiose unveiling of the landmark 10th season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has failed to win over one of the most important people in the PSL cricketing sphere, with Ali Tareen being left unimpressed by the PCB’s efforts.
The Multan Sultans owner has openly questioned the PCB’s bold declaration that the upcoming PSL will be the “best ever,” suggesting that the governing body is leaning too heavily on slogans without making tangible changes.
Ali Tareen, speaking on the Ultra Edge podcast hosted by CrickWick, didn’t hold back in his critique, pointing out that the PCB’s claim lacks merit in the absence of any meaningful innovation or structural improvement.
“How is PSL 10 bigger and better? Someone explain to me what these hollow words mean. How will it be the best PSL?” Tareen remarked during the episode. “Same games, same teams. We always have nail-biting matches, but what is different this time? Same stadiums too. Is that what is going to make this the best PSL ever? I am tired of these hollow words,” he added.
Ali Tareen also called out the PCB’s lack of innovation in bettering the league despite having ample time for planning and improvements.
“PCB is saying we are going to do exactly what we did last year and the year before that, but this will be the biggest PSL. How? What are your plans to make it bigger?” he said. Tareen also lamented the lack of attention the PSL has received from the PCB. “I genuinely feel hurt that our biggest brand has been reduced to this. It is just depressing to see,” Ali Tareen added.
While the PSL has undoubtedly grown in stature over the years—both commercially and competitively—Tareen’s remarks highlight a growing concern among franchise owners and fans that the league could stagnate without fresh ideas. Suggestions around venue expansion, improved fan engagement, greater player availability, and better scheduling have been floated in recent seasons, but little has materialized on the ground.
These comments from Tareen, who has been a vocal and progressive figure in the PSL ecosystem, particularly concerning his own team, Multan Sultans, present a firm challenge to the PCB regarding the state of its premier T20 competition. The PCB has already taken steps to ensure a better product in the future, but the plans in the pipeline do not satisfy the stakeholders at present.
