Nicholas Kirton, captain of the Canada men’s national cricket team, has been taken into police custody in Barbados, according to reports surfacing this week. The Jamaica Gleaner first reported that the 26-year-old was detained on Sunday, though specific details surrounding the arrest have not yet been made public.
In response, Cricket Canada (CCA) released an official statement acknowledging the predicament and confirming that it is closely monitoring the developments. “Cricket Canada has been made aware of the recent allegations and detainment involving national team player Nicholas Kirton,” the board stated. “We take this matter seriously and are actively following the situation as it unfolds.”
The statement emphasized the board’s commitment to transparency and integrity, while also assuring that the focus of the wider squad remains intact ahead of their next international assignment. “While this situation is being addressed, we would like to assure the public that our men’s team is fully focused on preparations for the upcoming North America Cup,” the board added.
Canada is set to take part in the inaugural edition of the North America Cup which is scheduled to begin on April 18 in the Cayman Islands. The tournament will feature teams from the USA, Bermuda, Bahamas, and the hosts alongside Canada. Nicholas Kirton’s status for the tournament is now in serious doubt, with no official word yet on whether he will remain part of the squad.
Kirton, born in Barbados, has been a vital figure in Canadian cricket in recent years. Before making his mark with Canada, he represented the West Indies Under-19 side and also played domestically for Barbados. The left-handed batter has already featured in 21 ODIs for Canada, scoring 514 runs, and has 627 runs to his name in 28 T20Is. In 2020, he appeared in three Caribbean Premier League matches for the Jamaica Tallawahs.
With just two weeks left before the team’s next competitive fixture, all eyes will be on how the situation develops—and how it might impact Canada’s campaign in the upcoming regional tournament.
