In line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Rawalpindi has made a historic move by launching commercial driving training for women, supervised by female instructors.
This initiative, called the Empowered Women Programme, is being implemented in all driving schools run by the City Traffic Police (CTP), marking a first for the province.
Following the directives of Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Benish Fatima, the program aims to support women who wish to gain driving skills for professional purposes.
According to officials, the goal is not only to promote independence among women but also to open up employment opportunities in the transport sector.
During the official launch ceremony at the Traffic Headquarters in Racecourse, several women members of the Punjab Assembly were in attendance.
CTO Benish Fatima addressed the gathering, explaining the broader vision behind the programme. She emphasized that female trainees would benefit from being instructed by women, creating a more open and supportive learning environment.
Furthermore, the CTO noted that this training model allows women to comfortably raise questions, share challenges, and gain practical experience—factors that are often overlooked in male-dominated settings. By removing these barriers, the initiative seeks to promote professional equality and gender inclusion within the driving profession.
As the event concluded, assembly members lauded the programme and praised CTO Rawalpindi’s leadership. They also encouraged other districts to follow suit and replicate this inclusive initiative, calling it a model for empowering women across Punjab.
