Govt Appoints Muzaffar Mirza As New SECP Commissioner

The Finance Division has notified the appointment of Muzaffar Mirza as Commissioner, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) by lowering experience requirements.

According to the notification, the federal government has appointed Muzaffar Ahmed Mirza as the Commissioner SECP for three years.

Pertinently, the Finance division shortlisted three candidates for the powerful regulatory role: Muzaffar Mirza, Capt (r) Saeed, and Shaista Bano.

Sources said that previously, candidates for the Commissioner’s post needed 20 years of experience. But the Finance Division this time has lowered the requirement to 10 years. This change reportedly helped Mirza, who is the most junior among the shortlisted candidates.

Sources claim Mirza has close ties with a group led by former SECP Chairman Zafar Hijazi. They allege the rules were changed to ensure his eligibility.

ProPakistani reached out to the Ministry of Finance and SECP for a comment, but a response wasn’t communicated till the filing of this story.
