Two-Month Ban Enforced on Fancy Number Plates, Pressure Horns and Tinted Windows

In a significant move to improve road safety and curb illegal activities, the Commissioner of Karachi has imposed a two-month ban on the sale, distribution, and installation of fancy number plates, pressure horns, and tinted windows in the city.

The decision follows a recommendation by the DIG Traffic, who highlighted the increasing presence of vehicles with illegal modifications, including fake number plates, tinted windows, and unauthorized pressure horns, in various markets across Karachi. These modifications are not only illegal but also compromise public safety and facilitate criminal activities.

The banned items include green number plates, rotating lights, and sirens, which have become widespread in Karachi’s vehicle markets. These unauthorized modifications, according to the DIG, violate traffic regulations and pose a significant threat to public security.

The Commissioner has acted on these concerns by issuing a formal notification, effective from April 8, 2025, to June 7, 2025, that prohibits the sale, distribution, and installation of these illegal vehicle accessories within the Karachi division’s jurisdiction.

As part of the enforcement efforts, Station House Officers (SHOs) at relevant police stations can register written complaints about violations of this ban. Authorities have also urged the public to report any instances of illegal activities or modifications.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to tackle the growing problem of unauthorized vehicle modifications, with the ultimate goal of improving road safety and reducing crime in Karachi. The ban is expected to provide relief to residents by limiting the use of illegal vehicle accessories that contribute to noise pollution, traffic violations, and safety hazards on the roads.
