The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered a Rs10,000 fine for individuals found wasting water inside their homes. Justice Shahid Kareem issued the directive during a hearing, emphasizing the need for strict measures to conserve water.
Justice Kareem also instructed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to stop approving maps for houses larger than one kanal and to ensure full compliance with its rules and regulations. The LDA submitted a notification to the court, confirming its commitment to implementing these directives.
LHC further ordered the LDA not to approve maps for houses under construction without a water recycling system. Justice Kareem stated that if a map is approved, an official must visit the site to ensure compliance with court orders.
Highlighting the urgency of water conservation, Justice Kareem noted that large amounts of water are wasted at service stations, calling it a crime. He urged the government to adopt a comprehensive policy for water protection and storage, adding that water conservation is also a teaching of religion.
Justice Kareem praised the Department of Environment for its efforts in safeguarding water resources and directed other development authorities, including the Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) and Multan Development Authority (MDA), to finalize rules for water safety.
Representatives from the Environment Commission, LDA, PHA, and the traffic department were present during the hearing. The case was adjourned until April 18, 2025.
