Adiala Road Flyover Project Misses Yet Another Deadline

The Adiala Road Flyover project, valued at Rs. 2.113 billion, will not meet its second deadline of April 15 set by the Punjab government due to the slow pace of work, according to various reports.

As of now, only 65% of the work has been completed.

Reasons for the Delay

A senior official from the district administration informed Dawn that the project is now expected to be completed by the end of May.

Over 30% of the work remains, with 15 girders installed so far on the flyover’s pillars.

Once the remaining girders are installed, a test will be conducted, which will take about a week to complete.

The official noted that Ramazan, coupled with rainy weather and the Eid holidays, had slowed down progress.

Despite this, the official emphasized that speeding up the work could compromise its quality.

Current Status and Future Steps

The divisional administration is keen to complete the project as soon as possible, especially as construction on the GPO Chowk underpass has already started, which is affecting traffic flow in the area.

The official stated that the flyover is now scheduled to open for traffic by May-end after all tests are completed.

The flyover, which is 1915 feet long and 52 feet wide, will feature 22 feet service roads on both sides.

It is a crucial part of the larger Ring Road project, with plans in place to widen and make Adiala Road signal-free for smoother traffic flow.

Eight kanals and 11.5 marlas of land were acquired at a cost of Rs317.623 million for the project.

Efforts to Expedite the Project

Despite the delay, the district administration has urged the Communication and Works Department to utilize all available resources to ensure the timely completion of the project.

The official emphasized that the deputy commissioner has directed all concerned departments to prioritize the flyover’s completion.

  • Khawaja Corporation Crossing at Adiala road was never a traffic mess crossing as of today’s situation.
And it is just bcz the construction of Askari13 and 14 accordingly. The second main reason is the mushroom growth of private housing societies beyond Central Jail with expansion of additional phases of Behria and DHAs.
Had it been only private housing schemes, Adiala Road had never ever received such an importance.
With DHA and Behria’s plan to pave easy access routes to their existing sectors till RAWAT and congestion at Askai 13 and connectowards Askari 14, RDA had to replan a link road for ease of above mentioned socities.
Khawaja Corporation flyover is the first line of action in this regard by RDA and again apparently it is obvious that this flyover is only to reduce traffic mess at askari residentials and the rest if the riad will never ever be constructed to meet the requiremnts of the general public residing in different localities along Adiala Road unto gorakh Pur.

    • While it’s true that Askari housing and the rapid growth of DHA/Bahria have increased pressure on Adiala Road, dismissing the Khawaja Corporation flyover as only serving elite interests overlooks the broader public utility and long-term urban need of this project.

      1. A Key Bottleneck Was Already Forming
Even before the recent construction booms, Khawaja Corporation Chowk had started showing signs of congestion due to:

Growing population density in Gulshanabad, Hill View, Munawar Colony, etc.

Increased commercial activity on Adiala Road

Poor traffic management and signal-free crossings

The flyover directly addresses these real traffic bottlenecks.

      2. Thousands of Daily Commuters Will Benefit
This intersection isn’t exclusive to Askari or DHA/Bahria traffic. People from:

      Lalazar, Gorakh Pur, Adiala Village

Chontra, Pia Colony, and smaller nearby towns
use this route daily to get to:

      Saddar, Murree Road, Islamabad Expressway

The flyover is a shared lifeline, not a private road.

      3. Strategic Planning, Not Bias
Urban infrastructure needs to anticipate future loads, not just react to present ones. With the area’s projected population rise, RDA’s decision to start from a high-density node like Khawaja Corporation was strategic:

It reduces accidents and delays at a known choke point.

It sets the foundation for future road extensions further along Adiala.

      4. It’s Not Either-Or
Claiming the flyover shouldn’t be built unless the entire road is upgraded is unrealistic. Incremental infrastructure is how most cities evolve. Just because the whole Adiala corridor won’t be developed immediately doesn’t mean doing nothing is better.

    • Kindly provide some street lights in that area of Defense road its very horrible or crucial to pass that road in Night

  • I takes more than 2 months to finish adiala road work i bet on it. They still working after eid ul Adha.
