Pakistani Runners to Attempt the Boston Marathon in Shalwar Kameez

Eighteen Pakistani runners are set to make history at the 129th Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest marathon, on April 21. This exciting group is bringing pride and unique flair to the global stage.

Danish Elahi and Faisal Shafi are aiming for a world-first: running a sub-4-hour marathon while wearing Pakistan’s traditional shalwar kameez.

Six runners—Danish Elahi, Adnan Gandhi, Hira Diwan, Yusra Bokhari, Nizar Nayani, and Jamal Khan—are set to earn the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Medal, marking their completion of all six major marathons (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York). Faisal Shafi already achieved this in 2024, becoming the eighth Pakistani Six Star Finisher. Hira Diwan, the only Pakistani woman in this group, is inspiring many with her journey.

The Pakistani contingent, hailing from Karachi, Islamabad, the UK, and the USA, includes runners like Dr. Salman Khan and Huma Rehman, who’ve shone in past marathons. They’ll tackle the 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Boston, joined by 30,000 athletes from 128 countries.

Social media is abuzz with support. “Our runners are making Pakistan proud!” one fan posted. With the marathon’s theme, “Meet the Moment,” these runners are doing just that, showcasing Pakistan’s talent on the world stage.
