Cameras and Trackers Now Mandatory for Heavy Vehicles in Karachi

In a major development, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has made it compulsory for all heavy traffic vehicles (HTVs) to install cameras and trackers in response to the recent rise in traffic accidents across the city.

The decision was reached following successful talks with goods transporters, who ended their strike that had disrupted port operations and affected trade activities. A key part of the agreement is the installation of three cameras on every HTV—one on the front bonnet, one at the rear, and one inside the vehicle.

According to Imdad Naqvi, a leader of the transporters’ association, the vehicles will also be fitted with safety guardrails near the tires to reduce the impact of side collisions. Additionally, trackers will be installed in each vehicle to help monitor movement and assist authorities during hit-and-run or accident investigations.

These tracking records will be accessible at the DIG Traffic Office.

The association has also committed to ensuring the mechanical fitness of all dumpers and tankers within 3 to 6 months. Reports on the status of vehicle tonnage and safety upgrades will be shared with the authorities every 10 days.

However, transporters said the May 1 deadline was unrealistic and asked for more time for full implementation.
