The Pakistan Super League could be headed for some major changes in the near future, with PSL CEO Salman Naseer confirming ongoing talks with franchises over structural revamps ahead of the next season.
Speaking during an event this week, Salman Naseer confirmed that the league’s management and team franchises have been discussing changes on several fronts, including how the league operates as a whole. One of the key topics on the table remains the introduction of an auction-style player draft for next year. However, Naseer was clear—no final decision has been made yet.
Everybody has to agree on some changes,” Naseer said. “We talked about the auction, but we didn’t reach an agreement on that. There are multiple things on the table, and we’re trying to get unanimity.
The idea of switching from the current draft system to an auction format—similar to what the IPL uses—has been floated several times over the past few seasons. An auction system could allow teams more flexibility in assembling their squads and potentially create more excitement around player signings.
According to Naseer, that’s exactly why the decision can’t be rushed. All six franchises need to be on the same page before any such changes can move forward.
While the auction model has grabbed the most headlines, Salman Naseer hinted that it’s not the only change being considered ahead of next year’s PSL. He didn’t go into detail but mentioned that there are “multiple things on the table”—suggesting broader discussions around league structure, scheduling, or player retention rules.
This may also likely include a new revenue-sharing model, the introduction of two new franchises, as hinted earlier, a more expansive schedule, or a complete overhaul of the current structure to not only satisfy the team owners but also attract more fans to the ground.
For now, PSL fans won’t see any immediate changes to how teams are built or how the league runs. However, the fact that discussions are happening behind the scenes shows the league is open to evolving and is watching how other leagues operate around the world.
Change is on the horizon—but only when everyone’s ready to move forward together.
