In a significant move aimed at reinvigorating local football in Pakistan, the District Football Association (DFA) Lahore has officially launched the Lahore Football League, signaling a renewed chapter for grassroots development in the city.
The decision was announced during DFA’s first General Council meeting, held at the Raiders Football Ground, which brought together more than 25 club representatives from across the provincial capital.
“This is just the beginning. We are laying the foundation for a stronger footballing future in Lahore—one based on unity, structure, and opportunity,” DFA Lahore President Zia Arif Dogar said during the announcement.
The Lahore Football League will be a city-wide competition exclusive to clubs officially registered with the DFA. This move aims to enforce legitimacy and encourage clubs to align with regulatory norms while ensuring that competitive opportunities are distributed fairly and transparently.
Alongside the league, the DFA passed other resolutions emphasizing improved coordination between clubs, support for the registration of new football entities, and the promotion of development programs at the grassroots level. These decisions, stakeholders said, are designed to bring consistency and professionalism to local football structures that have long suffered from ad hocism.
The establishment of a professional league in any capacity in Pakistan is welcome news for the players and fans who continue to support football in the country despite the tribulations. With the first step taken care of, the focus will likely shift to bringing this initiative to other cities across Pakistan.
If this idea takes root, there will be improved hope that the upcoming Pakistan Football Federation governance can create a centralized professional football league using the same models.
