Punjab Announces Thousands of Goats for Farmers

In a major step towards the development of the livestock and dairy sector, the Punjab government has announced a Rs. 500 million project to provide 5,000 high-quality male goats and rams to livestock breeders.

The initiative, launched under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to boost meat production across the province.

According to the Livestock and Dairy Development Department, applications are now open for interested farmers, who have until April 30 to apply for the scheme. The program will offer animals with superior genetic potential, which is expected to enhance the overall meat yield in the province.

Project Launch Areas

In the first phase, the program will be launched in six districts:

  • Dera Ghazi Khan Division: D.G. Khan, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, Rajanpur
  • Sargodha Division: Bhakkar and Khushab

Farmers in these areas will also receive support services such as free vaccinations, training in animal care, breeding, feeding practices, and disease control — aimed at reducing animal mortality and improving productivity.

Who Can Apply?

The eligibility criteria for farmers include:

  • Must own a herd of 20 to 40 female animals
  • Must be a registered livestock farmer on the 9211 system
  • Must be a resident of the relevant district

Subsidy Breakdown

The government will cover 70% of the cost, while farmers will contribute the remaining 30%. Breeders receiving animals under this scheme must commit to keeping the male goats and rams for at least two years for breeding purposes.

Transparent Selection Process

Applications must be submitted to the designated desks at the offices of the Deputy Directors of Livestock in the concerned tehsils. The selection of beneficiaries will be done through e-balloting, managed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
