National CERT Shares Advisory Against Sharing Army Related Content Amid Rising Tensions

In light of escalating tensions in the Indo-Pak region, the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued a high-priority advisory, calling on media organizations, freelance journalists, digital content creators, and the general public to exercise extreme caution when posting or sharing content related to military activities.

Dangers Involved

The advisory comes amid a surge in the circulation of videos, images, and commentary revealing troop movements and sensitive military operations on social media and public forums. National CERT warns that such disclosures—whether intentional or accidental—can severely compromise national security, endanger operational effectiveness, and provide adversaries with valuable intelligence.

The NCERT warns that uncontrolled dissemination of sensitive material can lead to operational security breaches, strategic intelligence exposure, and even geo-intelligence compromise. “Real-time disclosure of troop locations or movements may aid hostile surveillance, sabotage, or targeted attacks,” the advisory states. It also warns of the growing threat of misinformation, disinformation, and synthetic media such as deepfakes, which can manipulate public perception, erode trust, and escalate tensions.

It stresses that not only media professionals but also social media influencers and the general public are at risk of inadvertently contributing to these threats.

What to Do

To mitigate these risks, National CERT recommends refraining from filming or publishing material that exposes military activities, avoiding live updates from sensitive regions, and verifying the authenticity of any audio-visual content before sharing. The advisory also urges the use of deepfake detection tools, multi-stage editorial checks, and strict adherence to ethical journalism standards.

Legal compliance is another key focus, with the advisory reminding all stakeholders that unauthorized disclosure of strategic information is a punishable offense under national security laws. Media organizations are encouraged to brief and train all contributors, including freelancers, on legal boundaries during conflict reporting.

National CERT is also calling for public awareness campaigns, workshops, and distributing advisory materials to foster a culture of caution and responsibility in digital communication. The agency emphasizes that every individual and organization has a role to play in protecting national security and maintaining public order.
