Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus and Other Chinese OEMs May Ditch Android as Trump’s Trade War Escalates

As President Donald Trump ramps up his renewed trade war with China, some of the world’s largest smartphone brands are quietly preparing for a future without Google. Major Chinese manufacturers — Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Huawei — are reportedly exploring a Google-free Android alternative, aiming to reduce reliance on US technology amid rising political tensions.

Backup Plans Triggered by Past Sanctions

During Trump’s previous term, Huawei was blacklisted, cutting it off from US software, services, and even hardware — including the Google Play Store, which crippled its global smartphone business. Now, with geopolitical risks returning, other brands fear they could be next.

Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 Could Be the First

Industry insiders claim that Xiaomi’s upcoming HyperOS 3 might lay the groundwork for this new platform. Though not officially confirmed, the system could introduce tools to shift the ecosystem away from Google dependencies. It remains uncertain whether this means full app independence or just partial detachment in a step by step process.

HarmonyOS Led the Way

Huawei responded to US sanctions by launching HarmonyOS, which eventually removed Android compatibility entirely. The question now is whether other Chinese brands will follow suit, potentially adopting Huawei’s ecosystem tools such as Petal Maps or the Ark Compiler, or build something entirely new.

Massive Impact on Global Market

The combined power of these manufacturers is immense. According to Q1 2025 data, Xiaomi leads China’s smartphone market, followed by Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo. Collectively, they represent two-thirds of domestic shipments and hold a significant global market share. Xiaomi has also been the third biggest phone maker globally for quite a while.

If even a portion of these brands launch phones without Google services, it could trigger one of the largest software ecosystem shifts in smartphone history, affecting billions of users worldwide.
